What is ISO 27001?
ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for information security management. It provides a structured framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving an Information Security Management System (ISMS).
In practical terms, ISO 27001 helps organisations:
- Identify sensitive information and assets
- Assess risks to that information
- Implement controls to mitigate those risks
- Continuously monitor and improve security practices
It follows a risk-based approach, meaning security controls are tailored to the specific threats and vulnerabilities an organisation faces. Achieving certification requires rigorous independent audits to ensure that these processes are not only in place, but actively managed and improved over time.
.
Why is ISO 27001 Compliance So Important?
In our current digital landscape, organisations across the public and private sector face increasing security challenges, including cyberattacks, data breaches, and evolving regulatory requirements. ISO 27001 plays a critical role in helping businesses stay resilient and secure. Key benefits include:
1. Stronger protection against cyber threats – ISO 27001 provides a comprehensive framework to reduce vulnerabilities and proactively manage risks, helping prevent costly security incidents.
2. Enhanced trust and credibility – Certification demonstrates to customers, partners, and stakeholders that your organisation takes data security seriously and follows internationally recognised best practices.
3. Regulatory and compliance alignment – The standard supports compliance with data protection laws and regulatory requirements, making it easier to operate in highly regulated industries.
4. Competitive advantage – Many organisations now require ISO 27001 certification as a prerequisite for working with suppliers, making it a key differentiator in the market.
5. Continuous improvement – ISO 27001 isn’t a one-time achievement – it ensures organisations continuously assess and enhance their security posture as threats evolve.

Why ISO 27001 Matters for Bluewave and Our Customers
As a Platinum Salesforce Partner with over 25 years of experience, Bluewave operates at the heart of digital transformation for organisations across multiple industries – many of which operate in highly regulated environments.
Achieving ISO 27001 certification is especially significant because we handle very sensitive, business-critical data. Our customers trust us with systems and data that are essential to their operations. ISO 27001 ensures that this information is protected with robust, proven controls. We also work in regulated industries – from public sector organisations to enterprise clients, many of our customers face strict compliance requirements. Our certification provides assurance that we meet, and exceed, those expectations.
Security is embedded in everything we do, so rather than treating security as an afterthought, ISO 27001 reinforces our commitment to building it into every process, solution, and service we deliver. Additionally, Bluewave is committed to continuous improvement. Certification is not the finish line – it’s part of an ongoing journey. We continually review, test, and enhance our security practices to stay ahead of emerging threats.

The Journey to ISO 27001
As part of our commitment to security and our customers, Bluewave’s experts have put in place the appropriate policies and procedures to protect customers and their reputations. ISO 27001 is the gold standard of security protection a company can have. It involves not just Anti-Virus software, but a company wide approach to improving security. The ISO standard is not a static certification, it builds in on-going improvement for both staff and technology.
The ISO process is a company wide effort. The key people involved were:
- Kieran O’Sullivan – IT Manager
Paul Mooney – Sales Director
Lorraine Nolan – Delivery Director at Bluewave
James Hems – Head of HR, People, and Culture
Here’s a brief overview of Kieran’s experiences, as well as a look into the technical aspects of achieving this certification:
“The security landscape is a fast evolving arms race between those who want to protect the reputations and data of their clients and those who want to steal it.
When a company goes through the ISO 27001 process it has to document its procedures and demonstrate them to an internal and external auditor. The auditor will expect a standard set of documents marked off against a checklist which is referred to as a statement of applicability. This lists all the controls and in order to comply, we have to decide which are applicable to Bluewave. For example Bluewave does not have a physical office, so controls relating to ID cards for example do not apply.
The internal audit is to check that you are ready and the external auditor reviews your procedures to determine if you are doing what you say you are doing and they will ask for evidence of these actions. Achieving this certification was a challenge, but a worthwhile one in order to guarantee robust security for Bluewave’s internal teams, as well as our customers.”

A Commitment You Can Trust
Achieving ISO 27001 certification is a major milestone – but more importantly, it’s a reflection of who we are as a business. At Bluewave, we believe that trust is earned through transparency, accountability, and action. This certification reinforces our promise to deliver secure, reliable, and high-quality services to every customer we work with.
